This $160 smart thermostat runs itself—and Apple users will love it
Hands-on: The Aqara W200 Thermostat has lots of integrations and sensors so that you almost never have to touch it.
While most gadgets are graded on what they’re like to use, the Aqara Smart Thermostat W200 is a great gadget because you rarely need to touch it. After spending 20 minutes installing it, updating it, and making a few adjustments, the W200 has been completely automatic for my home.
To do this, the W200 packs in a bunch of sensors and integrations, including Apple’s Adaptive Temperature and Clean Energy Guidance. Your family’s iPhones can signal when someone is home and when people are away. Even better, if you have an Aqara video doorbell, the thermostat will show a preview when it rings.
I’ve tested multiple Nest and Ecobee thermostats over the years for different publications. Those are still great options, but the Aqara W200 is a sneaky good alternative for $160 that anyone using Apple’s Home app will seriously want to consider.
Getting the W200 Thermostat installed

To install the Aqara W200, I disconnected an Ecobee Essential Thermostat and connected my furnace and AC wires. Aqara says this thermostat should work with 85% of HVAC systems, including heat pumps and boilers. If you don’t have a C-wire, the company has an adapter you can buy.
I’ve done a fair amount of thermostat installs over the years, so I only glanced at the instructions. But as long as you don’t have a unique system, following the available instructions is easy enough for a lot of people to attempt themselves—even without past experience.
The 4-inch color touchscreen device looks nice to my eyes. But there is only a black exterior version, unlike some of the other brands with white or gold. Otherwise, the screen can get bright enough to be visible in direct sunlight. It will auto-dim and display other kinds of information when not in use.
And then under the covers, there’s Matter 1.4, so it can integrate with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. You can use Aqara’s mobile app if you prefer that.
The smartest features that Apple users will love

The W200 functions like any other thermostat at its basic level. You can adjust the heating and cooling temperatures right from the wall using its touchscreen. But one of the newest smart features available is Apple’s Adaptive Temperature. This integration can automatically change between preset modes like Home, Away, and Sleep depending on where you or your family’s iPhones are.
In the short time I’ve used this feature, it’s been great. Just be aware that you will need an Apple TV or HomePod to act as a home hub, and the phones will need to be running iOS 26.
The W200 also supports Apple’s Clean Energy Guidance, which can make temperature adjustments to use cleaner grid times when electricity may cost less. This comes from your home location, using environmental and grid data. I’m less sold on this feature because it seems vague to me. Still, it doesn’t hurt to have.
Among the coolest features is the connection to an Aqara video doorbell or smart lock, showing visitors on the screen or unlocking the door with a tap.
One feature that may go unappreciated—but shouldn’t—is the inclusion of mmWave radar. Instead of just sensing motion, it can better detect human presence. For people not in the Apple ecosystem or using Apple’s Adaptive Temperature, this will keep the W200 as accurate as possible.
The mmWave sensor can also be used for automations. So it can trigger lights and other connected accessories to come on or turn off if it doesn’t detect human presence.
Is the Aqara Smart Thermostat W200 worth buying?

The market for smart thermostats is fairly robust, with several good options. However, Ecobee’s Essential Thermostat retails for $140 and is quite basic. Google’s Nest Thermostat is also very basic for its $130 price. The Aqara Smart Thermostat W200 blows both of those out of the water in terms of functionality for its $160 retail price. It’s a good value.
You might not get every ounce of its available features if you don’t use Apple’s Home app, or you don’t have an Aqara video doorbell, but even without those integrations, the W200 is a very capable device. It works so well, you may forget about it.
