Value score
Creating a Value Score is an attempt to contextualize a product’s price into its overall worth. Because while some products work great, they're still overpriced. And just because a product is inexpensive doesn't mean it's worth buying.
The Value Score is represented by a number 1-10. One being a low value that most people shouldn't buy, and 10 being an exceptional value, regardless of circumstance.
Value Score number scale explained
● 1, 2: Product is high cost while also lacking features and/or quality
● 3, 4, 5: Product is above average cost, but has good features and/or quality
● 6, 7, 8: Product is at or below average cost with average features
● 9, 10: Product is at or below average cost with great features and/or quality
You can also look at the same Value Score number scale through the lens of who should buy something.
● 1, 2: Only a specialized market of consumers who should buy
● 3, 4, 5: Enthusiasts in a category; People not working with a strict budget; People who want a product to last for a long time.
● 6, 7, 8: Average value suitable for a lot of people; Acceptable for people with a product budget; Product is a necessity more than an interest; Able to recommend to a lot of people
● 9, 10: Exceptional value that can be recommended to everyone, regardless of circumstance
Value Score examples
Apple AirPods Max: Value Score: 3
Great product overall, but way overpriced. It is best in class in a lot of ways and has some differentiation for enthusiasts or Apple fans, but ultimately not a good value for most people.
Google Nest Hub 2nd gen: Value Score: 6
A display with a speaker for $99 is an affordable option for most people. Both the screen and speaker are mediocre in quality, but as a home hub to show the weather, listen to music, see who's at the door, and perform other home tasks, it's a solid product.
Pixel 5a: Value Score: 9
The sub $500 mobile phone is compelling in nearly every regard and although not perfect or the greatest in several ways, it provides excellent value compared to other modern phone options for most consumers.
